New Safety Standard for LED Modules
IEC/EN 62031: 2008, LED modules for general lighting – Safety specifications, allows a route for the testing of LED luminaires and their component parts.
An LED module is defined as a unit supplied as a light source with one or more LEDs.
The standard has within its scope modules that can have other control gear integrated (self ballasting modules), which are for connection to external power supplies; including directly to the mains supply. External power supply units, voltage or current types for LED modules are covered by their own specification IEC/EN 61347-2-13.
The testing of LED luminaires may now be undertaken using IEC/EN 62031, and the relevant part of IEC/EN 60598.
As LED modules can be tested separately, luminaire testing may take place to IEC/EN 60598 considering LED modules as approved components if already tested to IEC/EN 62031.
